The IBSS (Improved Ballistic Survival System) is a reproduction of the RBSS, adopted circa 2004 and issued to the 75th Ranger Regiment.
The original RBSS was issued as a component of the RLCS, the Ranger Load Carrying System. This was a collaboration between Eagle Industries, Allied Industries, the Natick Soldier Center et al. The RLCS fielded three seminal platforms: The RRV; the chest rig we know and love which can also carry a SAPI plate without the need for a separate carrier; the H-Harness, a type of belt rig, which went to machine gunners for its load capacity; and the RBSS, the plate carrier proper: SAPI front and rear, bottom-loading pockets, two-point buckle adjustment at the shoulders, extensive MOLLE, 1000D Cordura throughout.
In some ways, the IBSS is really a very close cousin to the Eagle Industries MBAV (not to be confused with the Crye LV-MBAV), which with its large cummerbund is more dedicated as a pouch platform, along with some other additions for further compatibility with the RLCS (e.g. the RRV back panel feature). The IBSS, however, is arguably the more timeless design, with its slick sides making it more compatible with the rigs people often run these days. The side buckles, 1.5″ wide,
