The Rhodesian Recon Vest is part of the RLCS program of the early 2000s. Eagle Industries et al designed and manufactured an ecosystem for a modern soldier, and the RRV is a timeless result of that.
Its name is an homage to chest rigs made by Fereday & Sons in Salisbury, Rhodesia during the 1970s Bush War. This was not issued kit for the Rhodesian military; rather, this was privately procured by soldiers who acknowledged the need more equipment carried close to the body. It is important to note, however, that Eagle’s RRV is by no means a copy of a pre-existing rig. It was very much a new, innovative design with many ingenious features.
Design Features: Principally, the rig is an ultra-durable 16-row MOLLE canvas. Customization is the key insight: as new pouches replace old, the skeleton remains strong. For scalability, Eagle also created a body armor securement system that places a hard armor plate in the front admin pocket and secures it with a vertical strap. A foldable admin panel sits in front of it and secures to the mini D rings on the strap.
Why chest-mounted? Belts keep weight low to the ground, but also place bulk at the key hinge of the human body. Particularly when crossing water or getting in and out of vehicles, a loaded belt gets cumbersome.
